Pressurized vs Non-Pressurized
The difference is one small hole, and it decides whether the coffee or the hardware is producing your crema.
What each one physically is
Turn a basket over and look at the bottom. A non-pressurized basket, also called single-wall, shows the same field of fine holes you saw from inside. Water passes through the coffee and straight out. This is what commercial machines use.
A pressurized basket, also called dual-wall, shows a solid floor with one small hole, sometimes a plastic insert. Inside it looks normal. Water passes through the coffee, collects in the space between the two floors, and is then forced out through that single hole.
That restriction is the whole design. It creates back-pressure regardless of what the coffee is doing, which means the machine can produce a crema-topped shot from coffee that would otherwise pass straight through.
Why machines ship with the pressurized one
Because it removes the hardest variable from the beginner's experience. Real espresso requires a grind fine enough and consistent enough to build resistance across the whole bed, and that requires a capable grinder. Someone using supermarket pre-ground coffee and a modest built-in grinder cannot reliably produce that, and without back-pressure the result is a pale, watery cup with no crema.
A pressurized basket sidesteps it. The hole does the work the coffee cannot, and the shot comes out looking like espresso. For a lot of people that is genuinely the right answer, and there is nothing wrong with using one.
It is worth understanding what the crema in that cup is, though. Crema from a pressurized basket is largely aerated liquid produced by forcing coffee through a small aperture. It looks similar and behaves differently: it tends to be paler, coarser-bubbled, and it collapses faster.
Why a bottomless portafilter needs the other one
This is the part that catches people out, and it is absolute rather than a matter of preference.
On a bottomless portafilter you are watching the underside of the puck. With a non-pressurized basket, that is exactly what you see: coffee emerging across the whole field of holes, converging into a stream, showing you every unevenness on the way.
With a pressurized basket there is no underside of the puck to see. There is a solid floor with a hole in it, and what emerges is a single jet from that hole. Nothing about the extraction is visible, because the basket is deliberately hiding it. Put a pressurized basket in a bottomless portafilter and you have spent money on a window with a wall behind it.
What changes when you switch
You will need to grind finer. Often several steps finer than the setting that worked before. The pressurized basket was compensating for a coarse grind; without it, the bed has to build the resistance itself. The first shots after switching usually run fast and pale, and that is grind rather than anything else.
Dose becomes more sensitive. A pressurized basket is forgiving about how much coffee is in it because the hole sets the resistance either way. A single-wall basket is not: too little and the bed lifts and cracks, too much and it presses into the shower screen. Weighing the dose stops mattering optional and starts mattering a lot.
Faults become visible. Channeling that was always happening now shows as a jet. This is the point of the exercise, but it is disconcerting for a week.
The cup changes. Assuming the grind catches up, the crema is darker, finer-bubbled and more persistent, and the body is heavier. If it does not change, the grind has not caught up yet.
How to tell which one you have
From inside the basket the two are indistinguishable, which is why so many people use a pressurized basket for months without knowing. Every reliable check is from underneath.
Turn it over. A full field of small holes across the whole floor means non-pressurized. A smooth floor with one hole means pressurized.
Look for a removable insert. Some machines supply a single basket with a plastic or steel insert that clips into the base. With the insert in, the basket is pressurized; with it out, it is not. If your basket has a part that pops out, you may already own both and not realize it.
Hold it to a light. Light passes through a non-pressurized basket across the whole floor. A pressurized one shows a single point of light, or none at all if the insert is seated.
Run water through it. Under a tap, a single-wall basket drains freely across the whole base. A pressurized one holds water and lets it out in a thin stream from one place.
The plastic insert, and why it goes missing
The removable-insert design causes a particular confusion worth naming. The insert is small, it is usually black plastic, and it falls out when the basket is knocked against a bin. People lose it without noticing, and their machine suddenly starts producing thin, crema-less shots from the same coffee at the same setting.
The reverse also happens. Someone buys a bottomless portafilter, keeps their old basket, and cannot understand why they see one jet from a hole rather than a puck. The insert is still in there.
If your shots changed character abruptly and nothing else changed, check the base of the basket before you touch the grinder.

If you are using pre-ground coffee and want a reliable cup with no adjustment, the pressurized basket is doing a job for you and there is no reason to abandon it. If you have a grinder you can adjust and you want to know what your coffee is actually doing, the single-wall basket is the one that lets you find out — and it is the only one that makes an open base mean anything.
